You must be thinking “another Top 10” list, right? Worry not! Specific criteria has been chosen to lessen the subjectivity for this article and to make it more relevant. As the title states, the chosen games belong to the Action RPG genre for PC that were released within the last few months. This means that the games considered are the action games with role-playing elements in them. In addition, the list is not going include remastered games being released over and over as well as DLCs but will include other games that were already out on other platforms many months before. Sorry not sorry Skyrim and GTA V. The final ten Action RPG games that chosen were based on feedback from people who enjoyed the games and who might still be currently playing it.
What Action RPG game should you play next?
Elden Ring
Imagine Dark Souls but with an open world and a generous helping of side quests that would make Skyrim proud. There would always be something for the player to do rather than get stuck on a boss. The world itself is beautiful enough to just explore and be in awe. The combat system is as expected from the same game developer with some new mechanics for the player to hunt and kill the grotesque yet cool looking mobs. Not recommended for beginners unless you do not mind throwing your controller at the wall a couple of times.
Lost Ark
It is the Diablo 3 that should have been. Despite its weak story and a subpar voice acting, the game allows you to interact with more than four players for that sweet coop carnage. With visuals and gameplay similar to an upgraded version of a dungeon crawler on mobile, it does have the satisfying combat system one would be looking in this type of game. Unfortunately, there is an in-game store for microtransactions but nothing that F2P players should cry about besides the queue when logging in.
Monster Hunter Rise
A welcome addition to the Monster Hunter franchise. Even if the weapons are the same, there’s nowhere else to go but up. Literally. The new wire bug mechanic allows the hunter to more aerial maneuvers during a fight and when traversing the map. The fact that they gave you a dog you can ride also makes it convenient. Little changes like this makes the difference between Monster Hunter World because Rise seems just a bit more beginner friendly. You can expect new and old monsters to hunt using the new engine originally intended for the Nintendo Switch but without any compromise.
Nobody Saves the World
Taking a break from AAA games, Nobody Saves the World is a refreshingly humorous action RPG with cartoonish graphics but enjoyable enough to play through. Its flexible skill selection and switching allows you to mix and match your arsenal to vibe with your playstyle and the current situation whether you are foiling the apprentice’s plans for glory or swapping forms to complete side quests.
Weird West
Where to begin with this one. It is a dungeon crawler with a design inspired by borderlands yet set in an odd version of Red Dead Redemption. A decent twin stick shooter combat system that allows you to interact with the environment. The environmental physics even allow you to pull of accidental wins if you play your cards right. True enough, it’s weird and in the west. Something that players will find out as they progress the surprisingly enjoyable storyline.
Rune Factory 4 Special
Originally on the switch, this game brings back nostalgia to harvest moon fans with an art style to entice the anime lovers. The developers managed to mix farm like chores and marriage system along with action one would expect from RPGs. A downside is that the PC version has an issue where it locks at 90 fps and is essentially unplayable since the game speed is syncs with it. The fix is turning on V-sync in order to bring it to a playable 60 fps that players can enjoy. Other than that issue, the game is full of content and game mechanics that can get almost anyone hooked.
Dying light 2 Stay Human
Ignoring all the game issues, this would have been a top survival action game. But despite that, it is still a game worth playing. It is not just a straight up hack-a-zombie game but rather one that would make the player strategically think how to go about the current fight. Similar to how you would plan take downs in Batman: Arkham Asylum. This type of action is easily translated when going coop since the game allows players to work together to explore, do story missions or boss fights. Characters in the game do have moments of enjoyment but not enough for the story to shine. Overall, it’s a balance of gameplay with bugs and a weak story.
Tunic
A beautifully designed Zelda style puzzle game from start to finish mainly because of the deliberate gibberish in game language. As adorable as the game is, it is definitely not for beginners. Explore the world and realize the hard way as to why the guide is not to be overlooked. As mentioned, that the language is undecipherable, the players will have to utilize the pictures to figure out what needs to be done.
God of War
For the first time ever, a God of War game…on PC! Exclusive rights aside, the none stop action paired with a rich storyline is what made the God of War series what it is today. Epic Kratos moments giving gods the finger keeps the player coming back for more. However, this game showcases a different side of Kratos just like an aging Wolverine from the Logan movie. Boss fights and cut scenes will keep the players in constant awe. Nothing like senseless violence to de-stress from a long day of work.
Anno: Mutationem
A retro meets modern action game where players go through mobs and thugs beat-em-up style reminiscent of Megaman. Go through side scrolling combat to defeat enemies and get new moves is easy to pick up. Story isn’t too impressive especially with a somewhat unnecessary introduction of many irrelevant characters. The game is as straightforward as one would expect but does seem to have gotten the formula right for an enjoyable game.
